Kratom (Mitragyna Speciosa) is a tropical tree from the coffee family, native to Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Locally known as the “Heavenly Leaf from Kalimantan”, it has been used traditionally to fight fatigue, improve productivity, relieve pain, and during cultural ceremonies. People usually chewed the leaves or prepared them as tea, sometimes using them as a substitute for opium.

Kratom leaves contain over 40 alkaloids, the most important being Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine, which act on mu-opioid receptors in the brain. At low doses, kratom works as a stimulant, while at higher doses it may provide pain relief and sedation, similar to opioids but with lower toxicity and reduced risk of severe respiratory depression.

Mitragynine also interacts with adrenergic, serotonin, and dopamine receptors, which may explain kratom’s stimulating and mood-enhancing effects. Today, kratom is gaining popularity in herbal supplements and is often used for pain management, energy, relaxation, and to support opioid withdrawal recovery.
